Jasmine M Cordoba:

Being a first generation college student, my parents had always wanted me to become a biological science major. I automatically knew that wasn’t the right path for me. Attending Southern Illinois University gave me the opportunity to explore new majors and clubs. My time at SIUC opened my eyes to the communication realm. I have always been the type of person who was greatly fascinated by the entertainment, mass media, advertisement, public relations, film, etc. Coming into the communications field, it has made me open my eyes to the endless opportunities there are in this field. I never knew that there were so many subfields that went into communications. After declaring my major I felt the need for a major change in my life. It was to leave Illinois for good and start the next chapter at The University of Tampa. Coming to this private institution definitely challenged me to become the best that I can be. The university has taught me to be creative, to think outside the box, and to be a risk taker in the communications field.

My time in the communications department has been a rollercoaster. I have had a lot of ups and downs, but that has never pushed me to the point where I wouldn’t want to be anything other than a communications major. Being in this field has tested me to reach for the stars. There is such a variety that goes into being a communications major and having a concentration in communication studies. This major lets you explore different styles and variations of verbal and non-verbal communication. I have learned everything from Public relations, advertisement, to graphic design, and so much more. Being able to have the opportunity of becoming well rounded in all aspects of communication gives me the ability to be more adaptable any task put in front of me.
